For the first time I have taken part in the Big Garden Birdwatch organised by the RSPB. The birds I saw are below in the order of seeing with the maximum number seen in brackets:
Wood pigeon (1)
Blue tit (3)
Blackbird (1)
Collared Dove (2)
Starling (3)
Robin (1)
Chaffinch (1)
Dunnock (1)
Great tit (3)
These have all gone into my own record, which is on a shared Google spreadsheet and can be seen here. I was hoping to see goldfinch or long-tailed tit but, in the end, the sightings were fairly typical in the hour given over to the birdwatch. My own record isn't quite so organised in that observations are somewhat sporadic, though I do record the maximum seen at any one time on each day of observation - the simple rationale is that there must be at least that number if seen at one time - any one bird could be the same bird seen many times or a succession of different individuals. There are times when I know a single bird is different, such as in clearly sexually dimorphic species like chaffinches or blackbirds. However, I stick to my rule and only record the maximum number seen at one time
